The subject theory of machine may be classified into two branches namely, kinematics of machine & dynamics of machine. The dynamics of machine can be further sub- divided as Statics and Kinetics.

  •  Kinematics of Machines -This branch of theory of machines deals with the study of relative motion between parts of which the machines are constituted, neglecting consideration of forces producing it. Thus, kinematics of machines deals with the study of motion from geometric point of view, i.e. paths of points on links, velocities and acceleration of points and links. Kinematics does not consider the forces applied on the body.
  • Dynamics of Machine- This branch of theory of machines deals with the study of motion of machine under the forces acting on different parts of machines. This branch can be further sub- divided as-
             (a) Statics- Statics deals with the         study of forces acting on the various parts of machines, at rest. The subject deals with the equilibrium of different parts of machines considering them as member of structures.
           (b) Kinetics- Kinetics deals with the study of forces which are produced due to inertia of moving parts of machines. The inertia forces are induced due to mass and change in motion of the machine.
