Degree of reaction:-

      The degree of reaction, R is defined as the ratio of isentropic heat drop in the moving blades to the sum of the isentropic heat drops in the fixed and moving blades

     The degree of reaction is,

                           ∆h (Moving blades)
  R =  ―――――――――――――――
          ∆h (Moving blades) + ∆h (Fixed blades)

where ∆h (moving blades) and ∆h (fixed blades) are the isentropic heat drops in moving blades and fixed blades respectively.

       Value of degree of reaction varies from 0 to 1 . A zero degree reaction implies an impulse stage or machine. In such a machine, no change of static head or pressure occur in rotor. Value  of R = 1 implies that the static blades are of the constant area implies type. Such a machine is called pure reaction machine. A steam turbine usually have a degree of reaction equal to 0.5 . For such a machine the stator and rotor blades will be the same.
