Turbomachine is a device that extracts energy or imarat energy to continuously flowing steam of fluid by the dynamic action of one or more rotating blade rows.
The prefix 'turbo' is a Latin word meaning 'spin' or 'whril' implying that turbomachine rotate in some way.
The principal components of a turbomachine are:―
- A vane carrying rotating element operating in a stream of fluid. This vane is also known as rotor,runner,impeller,etc.
- A stationary element or elements which usually acts as guide vanes for the proper control of flow direction and the energy conversation process.
- An input or an output shaft.
- A housing or stator.
